How we educate
Our Curriculum
The Olivia Montessori curriculum ensures that a high-quality learning experience is offered to each child and that developmental outcomes meet or exceed the national standards for early childhood education.
Montessori Inspired
Core Montessori elements are the foundation of the Olivia Montessori Curriculum. Our educators are trained in the Montessori method, and each classroom has a full set of Montessori materials. The Montessori approach allows every child to develop naturally — to learn and grow at their own pace. Our Curriculum will also borrow from other pedagogies to learn, invent, and improve our ability to support every child’s development.
National Curriculum Framework (NCF) Based
The National Curriculum Framework as prescribed by the Ministry of Education derives it's fundamental ideas from Montessori principles like Prepared Environment, Mixed Age Groups, Development of Panchakoshas, Balanced Curriculum that combines culture, etc. Our approach follows the prescribed guidelines as envisaged in the National Curriculum Framework.
Our Curriculum has four key areas: Development of Panchakoshas, Language & Literacy, Math, and Culture.
Five-fold development (Panchakosha Vikas)
The child is a whole being with panchakoshas or five sheaths. The holistic development of the child takes into account the nurturing and nourishment of these five areas. Acitivities are designed to enable development of each of these areas; keeping in mind that each area (layer) is interconnected and activities in one area contribute to the devlopment of the others.
Bauddhik Vikas (Intellectual)
Observation, curiosity, analytical ability, progression towards abstract and imaginative thinking, logical reasoning, creativity, ability to make decisions with the development of power to discriminate and sort.
Sharirik Vikas (Physical)
Age specific balanced physical development like gross motor skills, fine motor skills, physical fitness, refinement of sense.
Pranik Vikas (Life Energy)
Positive energy and enthusiasm, concentration in work.
Chaitsik Vikas (Spiritual)
Freedom, happiness, love and compassion.
Maansik Vikas (Emotional)
Independence, learning values like patience, care, grace and courtesy, respect.
Sports
Olivia Montessori in partnership with a state level cricket player teach sports every Thursday such as Basics of Football, balancing, throwball. Children enjoy a variety of exercises and at the same time develop an appreciation for sports and fitness. Our classroom lessons emphasize the correct terminology used in sports like goal, puck etc.
Language & Literacy
Our language activities build knowledge, skills, and concepts necessary for literacy. Our Curriculum also encourages independence, collaboration, and joy in learning. Olivia Montessori's language-rich environment supports children in developing strong literacy skills, a love of reading and writing, cultural competence, communication with multi-age peers, and the confidence to express their own creativity.
Everything is hands on learning. Children first learn with real material and then move to paper.
math
Lessons presented in the practical life and sensorial curriculum lay the groundwork for the child to begin to explore the world of math. The concrete math materials enable the naturally mathematical mind of the preschool child to progress from the concrete to the abstract through manipulation and experimentation. Children first explore the concept of quantity or “how many”. From there the child moves on to using symbols or written quantities and then begins to combine quantities for the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Math is first learnt conceptually with the help of real materials, then on paper.
Culture
Geography
The child is introduced to the globe first. Then a 2 dimensional puzzle of the world is laid out. The child learn about land, water and the idea of continents and the culture of various continents. Later, the child is introduced to the Map of India and the state map of Karnataka.
Botany
Children have an inherent draw towards nature. Gigantic trees, colourful flowers, dainty creepers fascinate a child. In our classroom children enjoy sowing seeds and watching them grow, watering plants and seeing flowers bloom, cleaning leaves and watching new tender leaves appear. Additionally our outdoor trips make the child aware of a variety of plants and flowers that surround them – they can touch the leaves, smell flowers and watch insects crawl.
Art
Paper, crayons, paint, scissors, glue are made available to the child and help nourish the artist within. Children will be guided through activities that include stamping, painting with various objects and on different textures, cutting paper, sticking and making patterns. Children love to get their hands dirty and we let them.
